In Afghanistan, as another deadline approaches, local clerics and tribal elders continue to negotiate for the release of 22 South Koreans.
A Taliban spokesman said the remaining hostages are safe and have been split into small groups being fed bread, yogurt and rice.
He reiterated demands that jailed Taliban militants be exchanged for the captives by midday Friday or that more hostages would be killed.
