Australia may be defined as a “western nation”, but its closest neighbors are Asian. Geographically, Australia is the closest western nation to China, a fact that is further demonstrated by our strong ties.
December 2007 marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between China and Australia. In April 2007, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer visited China. At that time Downer said “It’s the best time for Sino-Australian ties since 1972.” In our Up-Close interview, Geoff Raby, the newly appointed Ambassador to China described the high-level exchanges between our two countries.
