Mobile Phone Spy-software Emerges in Guangzhou

Residents of southern China's Guangzhou City recently often receive mobile phone advertising messages promoting a spy software which it is claimed can monitor other people's phone calls.
According to a report in Information Times, the messages were sent by a local company called Fei Dun Co.
A staff member from Fei Dun explained to the reporter how to spy on other people's phone with their software.
Firstly, you can download the software, called Xwodi, from the official website of the company and install it on your target phone. After some simple steps, you can hear what your target says on his or her mobile phone. If you also want to know to whom they send short messages, there's a cost for some key words.
Ms. Xie, a saleswoman of the spy software program, said it's actually not as cute as was advertised. The software has to be installed on handsets with the "Symbian" operating system, an open operating system for data-enabled mobile phones.
It can not wiretap conversations as convenient as one might want. It's also not safe, as people on the target phone can also hear noise from your side when it is being wiretapped, the report said.
The saleswoman says orders have been brisk in Shenzhen City. Most customers use the device to monitor children, lovers or business rivals. Compared to a private detective, it's cheaper.
However, a law expert has condemned the software, saying that it's illegal.
Ding Yiyuan from the Guangdong Hua'an law firm said the sale and use of wiretapping devices has to be authorized by public security department, otherwise it's illegal. Even though the software company has announced it holds no liability to the negative result brought by the use of spy software, the announcement is invalid since they are selling the devices without permission.
