Old place names reinstated in Nanjing

Nanjing is eager to give prominence to its ancient cultural tradition and historical legacy. Since the Three Kingdoms period some 2,000 years ago, Nanjing has served as the national capital for multiple dynasties.
Many of the city's old place names commemorated events of great moment; many honored leaders who had achieved renown in ancient days of glory.

Starting this week, the Eastern Chinese city of Nanjing restores the old names of 23 of its historic neighborhoods, bridges and major buildings.
The locations, from now on, will be known by the names by which they were known for centuries - before the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
