Many kids have their sights set higher than just entertaining themselves this summer. They're entertaining others and having fun. A grand dance gala in Hong Kong is bringing together more than 1800 teenagers and children from across China. The event is designated as part of the celebration marking the tenth anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland. Opening ceremonies were held Wednesday.
The children come from nearly every Chinese province, municipality and autonomous region, including Hong Kong SAR. They reflect a broad diversity of ethnic cultures.
And they entertain in a wide range of performing genres: folk dance, classical dance, ballet and tap.
These are just the warm up. Audiences are bound for Queen Elizabeth Stadium later this week for two huge performances. Among the audience, for those shows will be hundreds of PLA solders; on station in the special administrative region.
The Chinese Dancers' Association, the Hong Kong National Education Centre and the Hong Kong Aided Primary School Heads Association are co-sponsors. The aim is to offer children a platform to show their dance talent, thus to promote dance education for children in the mainland, as well as Hong Kong.
